1977 - Founded by Jayaprakash Narayan, to unite all anti-congress forces and for the elections held in 1977 after the 1975 Emergency.
1980 – First split was witnessed. Over the dual citizenship issue, members divided with Jan sangh and Janata Party. Outcome- BJP was born.
1987 – No problem for eight years. Ramakrishna Hegde broke away Janata Party and founded Janata Dal. Supporters were, Bommai, Deve Gowda, Prakash, Sindhya.
1988 – Janata Dal witnessed a split with Deve Gowda, who and former PM chandara shekar formed Samajwadi Janata Party.
1996 – Gowda became PM. Expelled Ramakrishn Hegde.
1997 – Lalu Prasad break away National Janata Dal into Rashtriya Janata Dal. Mulayam singh formed Samajwadi Party. Biju Janata Dal formed by Naveen Patnaik. Ram Vilas Paswan formed Lok Jana shakti.
1999 – Janata Dal in Karnataka witnessed a huge split. JD(s), JD(u).
2005– JD(s) leader Deva Gowda dismissed Siddaramiah. He formed an outfit and then joined Congress.
2007 – After many more splits and breakaways, the parent organization is still alive. Headed by Subramaniam Swamy, the Janata darbar is still going on.
